If I know right Ehrfried Wunderlich worked for "PGH Sinfonia", a cooperative for instrument making in Markneukirchen in GDR times, before he started as an independet violin maker. He especially makes very good cellos.

And no, is was not prohibited to be independent but it was very hard to become that.
